Quilting ServiceLori offers a quilting service to allow you to get on with piecing the next top. If you love piecing and playing with colour but are short on time, our machine quilting service will free you up. There’s no more guilt about starting a new project when we have transformed your UFO’s into cuddly bed quilts or elegant hangings, sofa throws or table cloths.
Continuous Line/Edge-to-Edge/Pantograph quilting offers an economical all-over design on a quilt top where colour is the emphasis. It is excellent on scrap quilts and repeated traditional patterns such as Irish Chain, Square-on-Square or Broken Dishes. Lori will use our 24" PRO hand-guided machine to do one of our many decorative designs by following the pattern with a laser light from one edge to the other - lengthwise or across the quilt, depending on the design chosen. Another possibility is to use our 30" Nolting with IntelliQuilter - the computerised option. Our price for this style of quilting is from $32.00 per sq metre ($3.00 per sq.ft.)
Meanders and Stippling are used to fill a background area, making the unsewn parts prominent. They are often used in conjunction with outline quilting to emphasise applique or a special piecing technique. Wiggle Stitch has a uniting effect. It can blend the colours in a pieced top and blur too marked colour changes. More importantly, it can also disguise irregular piecing. If your corners don’t match, or the seaming is a bit ragged, this might be the stitch to reinforce the piecing and to hide the blemishes. Meanders, stipple or wiggle stitch from $43.00 per sq metre ($4.00 per sq.ft.)
A sampler quilt might require Customised techniques. These could include outline or shadow quilting, stitch-in-the-ditch, latticing, feathers and so on, as each block can be treated differently. Many of these jobs can be done to extreme accuracy using our IntelliQuilter - a computerised system which drives a 24" Nolting longarm. Customised quilting costs from $55.00 per sq metre ($5.10 per sq.ft.)
Basting - if you love hand quilting, but hate basting, we will save your knees from the floor and your fingers from the pins. Our basting service tacks the quilt sandwich with easily-removed stitches about 1/2 to 1 inch long, in rows about 4 inches apart. We can supply backing and/or batting or you can provide your own. You need only send in your top as for the quilting service. We charge $14.00 per sq metre ($1.30 per sq.ft.) for basting.
Tips on Preparation
- No pinning or basting is required. The layers are held flat between rollers.
- Backing and batting must be 10 - 15 cm (4 - 6 inches) larger than the pieced top.
- We can provide wide backings and/or batting at an extra cost.
- If you pre-wash some fabrics, pre-wash them all to avoid uneven shrinkage if or when the quilt is washed.
- When piecing, check your seams are 1/4" in from the edges to keep them from pulling apart easily.
- Press seams toward the dark fabric where possible
- If you’re not sure how to overcome wavy borders, please ask someone who knows.
- When joining backing, cut off selvedges and press seams open.
- Make sure the backing is squared and straight.
- It is a good idea to choose a backing with similar colouring to the top.
